Wigtown bay is a fairly small bay consisting the estuaries of the rivers Bladnock and Cree.

All punting is now firmly controlled by permits, as the area in now a local nature reserve.

Launching is independently contolled by the harbour master and both permissions are required for access.

The river Humber is recognised as one of the 10 most dangerous waterways on earth.
My first outings (and attempts) were from Patrington Haven (the same as used by Stanly Duncan who went on to form WAGBI later to become BASC).

Any outing from this haven has to coincide with fairly high (spring) tides that coincide with first and last light requiring about 11+ hours afloat. going out with the morning tide and returning with the evening tide. This can be hazardous if problems are encountered with weather, punt or health, as no easy rescue is possible from the punting areas.

PHOTOGRAPHS FROM A RECENT OUTING AT CHICHESTER HARBOUR

This outing to Chichester harbour was a new experience, but after towing the punt nearly 800 miles (round trip) conditions were not right. After 6 hours afloat the area did not show us 1 duck.
Despite the obvious disappointment at not firing the big gun, the outing was still great fun, and with a suitable invitation would readily be repeated.
